O Apostle Matthew, we faithfully extol you, and with love and longing we honor you as a servant of Christ, an eye-witness and preacher, and as the first writer of His sayings. You are a great luminary and pillar of the Church. And now we honor your all-sacred memory. [SD]

Mode 4. Come quickly.
Be swift to accept our fervent prayers, O Lady and Queen, * and take them, O all-pure Maiden, and present them for us * before your own Son and God. * Rescue from every trouble * those who run to your shelter, * O Virgin Theotokos, and frustrate the scheming * of those who against your servants have shamelessly taken arms. Τὴν Σοφίαν καὶ Λόγον.
We Orthodox Christians possess your word you wrote as the unbroken foundation of right belief and the root of faith, and for this we sing your praise. From you, O Apostle Matthew, we unceasingly hear the divine words of Christ, His miracles, the divine Passion, burial and resurrection, and our souls are illumined. Therefore we faithfully pray to you. Intercede with Christ our God that He grant forgiveness of offenses to us who celebrate your holy memory with faith and love. [SD]
Glory. Both now. Theotokion.
Mode pl. 4. N/M (By conceiving the wisdom.)
O Virgin, from you our Fashioner assumed his own image, that had been broken, and He sympathetically refashioned it, O Bride of God. For being compassionate, he united it to divine nature and adorned it with rays of divinity. Therefore as we depict in icons the Lord who took the form of His image and became flesh, we worship the God-man, and we faithfully honor and inscribe the divine picture of Him in the flesh, as well as yours, O Theotokos, and our souls are thus illumined. [SD]
READER
Psalm 50 (51).
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. Mode 4. You who were lifted.
Ὁ ὑψωθεὶς ἐν τῷ Σταυρῷ.
When you had shed the yoke of being a publican and took instead the yoke of justice and virtue, you proved yourself to be a clever merchant and most wise, gaining for yourself the wealth of the wisdom from heaven. Thus you preached the word of truth, O Evangelist Matthew. And you have roused from slothfulness our souls, clearly describing the hour of Judgment Day. [SD]
Oikos.
The enemy’s tyranny rapaciously overpowers me, and he snatches away every seed from my soul, O Matthew friend of Christ. I pray you, plant for me the seed of your prayers, and bring forth fruit for your service, and allow me to sing of you, though I be very small. Make me a narrator of your many and great accomplishments, and of your relationship with Christ. You immediately left everything behind, and ardently followed Him who called you, becoming the first Evangelist in the world, clearly describing the hour of Judgment Day. [SD]
