Συνεσχέθη ἀλλʼ οὐ κατεσχέθη.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

Beholding the deception of the enemy ⁄ which surrounds and destroys the human race, ⁄ You loosed Your sharpened arrows, the apostles, ⁄ laying bare the serpent’s mouth of clay, Savior, ⁄ healing all who had been harmed by his wounding corruption! [OCA]

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

Shining with exalted splendor, most blessed one, ⁄ you appeared as lightning illumining the whole world, ⁄ as a mountain shedding sweetness like a divine rose from heaven, ⁄ as a chosen apostle, ⁄ completing the twelve-man army of the disciples of Christ. [OCA]

Glory.

The godly disciple, Good One, ⁄ having learned the depth of Your mystery, ⁄ loudly proclaimed You the Glory of the nations, ⁄ Who like a river of the world and a flooding wave, ⁄ become the source of streams of joy. ⁄ He announced the glad tidings of Your glorious condescension to us! [OCA]

Both now. Theotokion.

You gave birth to Christ, the incorrupt Immortality, ⁄ calling all who are mortal and perishing to eternal life! ⁄ You have enlightened and freed those held in darkness, ⁄ loosing the bonds of our captivity. [OCA]

The Epistle

For the Apostle.

Prokeimenon. Mode pl. 4. Psalm 18.

His proclamation went forth into all the earth. [SAAS]

Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God. [SAAS]

The reading is from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians.

1 Cor. 4:9 – 16

Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me. [RSV]

Alleluia. Mode 2. Psalm 88.

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Verse 1: The heavens shall confess Your wonders, O Lord. [SAAS]

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Verse 2: God is glorified in the counsel of saints.

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

The Gospel

For the Apostle.

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to John.

Jn. 1:43 – 51

At that time, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.” [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

Communion Hymn. Psalm 18.

His proclamation went forth into all the earth, and his words to the ends of the world. [SAAS] Alleluia.

Hymn after Holy Communion.

Mode 2.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

DISMISSAL

Glory to You, O Christ our God. Glory to You.

May Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, the holy, glorious and all-lauded Apostle Philip, whose memory we observe; and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
