With the rivers of your tears you made the barren desert bloom; and with your sighs from deep within, you made your labors bear their fruits a hundredfold; and you became a star, illuminating the world by your miracles, O Joannicius, our devout father. Kathisma I.

For compunction.

Mode 2.

My transgressions are like waves that crash against me, and my many offences agitate me, as if I were alone in a boat on the high seas. I pray You lead me through repentance to a tranquil harbor, O Lord, and save me. [GOASD]

Verse: O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your wrath, nor chasten me in Your anger.

Mode 2.

O Lord, I am like that fig tree, on which there was no fruit, for I have not produced any fruits of compunction. I am fearful that I will be cut down, and I am terrified by the unquenchable fire. So I implore You, before that fateful torment, to allow me time for repentance and to save me. [GOASD]

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

As the Mother of God, you are the source * of compassion. O Lady, count us worthy of pity. * Look upon us graciously, though we have sinned. * Demonstrate your power, as you always do. * For, placing our hope in you, * we cry out, Rejoice, to you, * as did Gabriel of old, * as the chief commander of the bodiless hosts. [SD]

The appointed Kathisma of the Psalter may be read, i.e. Kathisma 5. There is no litany, but immediately the following:

David said, “Have mercy on me.” And likewise I cry out, “I have sinned, O Savior. I pray You blot out my sins, through my repentance, and have mercy on me.” [GOASD]

Verse: Look upon me and have mercy on me.

Mode 2.

For the two sins he committed, David grieved and cried, “Have mercy on me, O God; have mercy on me!” And I, for my countless transgressions, pray to You. He wet his couch with many tears, and I cannot produce a single teardrop. I am lost! So I entreat You: “Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy!” [GOASD]

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Mode 2.

We magnify you, O Theotokos, and we cry out: Rejoice! You are the gate that was shut; and through you Paradise of long ago was opened to humanity. [SD]

Εὐσπλαγχνίας ὑπάρχουσα.

O all-holy incorporeal hosts, * we implore you to pray for us to our good God and Master, * that He spare us in that hour on Judgment Day, * and release us from the bitter punishment. * We earnestly run to you * for protection from the every threat * of demons and from all * the sinful passions that darken our souls. [GOASD]

Verse: God is wondrous in His saints.

For the Martyrs.

Mode 2.

The holy Martyrs had You, who covers heaven with clouds, as a cover in the world, and thus they endured when the villains tortured them, and they negated idolatry. By their intercessions for us, O Savior, free us from the unseen enemy and save us. [GOASD]

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Mode 2.

Who ever heard of a mother who was virgin? Who ever knew of a virgin who was a mother? Everything about you is extraordinary, O Theotokos. Therefore with faith we magnify you. [GOASD]

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. [SAAS]

Mode pl. 4. N/M (O Champion General.)

You were seen as an all-brilliant star shining upon the earth and illuminating those in the nether darkness of the passions, a most-helpful doctor to the ill, but as having received the grace of healing, grant all healing to us who entreat you so that we may cry: Rejoice, father Ioannikios. [VPA]

Oikos.

The God-inspired manner of your virtuous actions flashed in the world, all-blessed one, and drove away every cloud of the passions of the soul and shone forth immaterial light to those who with faith and fervor cry out to you thus: [VPA]

Rejoice, delightful fame of monastics; rejoice radiant lamp of the world.

Rejoice, speedy intercession for those in illness; rejoice the unmoved support of the healthy.

Rejoice, for you throw off the earthly army; rejoice, for you changed corrupted things for heavenly.

Rejoice, truly the steward of divine virtues; rejoice the worker of unutterable wonders.

Rejoice, the destruction of all passions; rejoice, your most fervent protection.

Rejoice, most-ready deliverer of all; rejoice refuge of all the world.

Psalm 148.

Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise Him in the highest. Praise Him, all you His angels; praise Him, all you His hosts. Praise Him, sun and moon; praise Him, all you stars and light. Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, and you waters above the heavens. Let them praise the Lord’s name, for He spoke, and they were made; He commanded, and they were created. He established them forever and unto ages of ages; He set forth His ordinance, and it shall not pass away. Praise the Lord from the earth, you dragons and all the deeps, Fire and hail, snow and ice, stormy wind, which perform His word, mountains and all the hills, fruitful trees and all cedars, wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds, kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the earth, young men and maidens, elders with younger, let them praise the Lord’s name, for His name alone is exalted; His thanksgiving is in earth and heaven. And He shall exalt the horn of His people, a hymn for all His saints, for the children of Israel, a people who draw near to Him. [SAAS]

Psalm 149.

Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of His holy ones. Let Israel be glad in Him who made him, and let the children of Zion greatly rejoice in their King. Let them praise His name with dance; with tambourine and harp let them sing to Him; for the Lord is pleased with His people, and He shall exalt the gentle with salvation. The holy ones shall boast in glory, and they shall greatly rejoice on their beds; the high praise of God shall be in their mouth and a two-edged sword in their hand, to deal retribution to the nations, reproving among the peoples, to shackle their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron, to fulfill among them the written judgment: This glory have all His holy ones. [SAAS]

Psalm 150.

Praise God in His saints; praise Him in the firmament of His power; praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him according to the abundance of His greatness. Praise Him with the sound of a trumpet; praise Him with the harp and lyre; praise Him with timbrel and dance; praise Him with strings and flute; praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise Him with triumphant cymbals; let everything that breathes praise the Lord. Alleluia. [SAAS]

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
