When St. Epiphanius with rev’rence * gave heed to devout St. Andrew’s words, * O Virgin, he began to see * how you the Queen of heaven were * protecting all the Christians there beneath your holy protective veil. [GOASD]

Μακάριοι οἱ δεδιωγμένοι ἕνεκεν δικαιοσύνης, ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν ἡ Βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

Θαυμάτων τῆς Σκέπης σου τῆς θείας, ὁρῶντες Παρθένε τὴν πληθύν, ἃ ἐνεργεῖς ἑκάστοτε, ἡμῶν εἰς περιποίησιν, χαριστηρίους αἴνους σοι, Ἑλλήνων παῖδες προσάγομεν.

O Virgin, we see the many wonders * and miracles that you work each day * by your divine protective veil, * in your maternal care for us. * And we the faithful offer you poetic praises in gratitude. [GOASD]

Μακάριοι ἐστὲ ὅταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς, καὶ διώξωσι, καὶ εἴπωσι πᾶν πονηρὸν ῥῆμα καθʼ ὑμῶν, ψευδόμενοι ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

Ὁλόφωτος ἀληθῶς, ἐπέστης Παντοβασίλισσα, καὶ ἥπλωσας θαυμαστῶς, τὴν ἄχραντον Σκέπην σου, σκέπουσα τοὺς δούλους σου· ὅθεν ἀνυμνοῦμεν, τὴν πολλὴν σου ἀγαθότητα.

Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tent, performing their ritual duties; but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the sins committed unintentionally by the people. Ἄξιόν ἐστιν ὡς ἀληθῶς μακαρίζειν σε τὴν Θεοτόκον, τὴν ἀειμακάριστον καὶ παναμώμητον καὶ μητέρα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν. Τὴν τιμιωτέραν τῶν Χερουβεὶμ καὶ ἐνδοξοτέραν ἀσυγκρίτως τῶν Σεραφείμ, τὴν ἀδιαφθόρως Θεὸν Λόγον τεκοῦσαν, τὴν ὄντως Θεοτόκον, σὲ μεγαλύνομεν.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

Again we pray for the protection of the Holy and Great Church of Christ, our Sacred Archdiocese (and this Sacred Metropolis), this city and every city and land, from wrath, famine, pestilence, earthquake, flood, fire, sword, foreign invasion, civil strife, and accidental death. That our good and benevolent God may be merciful, gracious, and forgiving, and may divert and disperse all anger and disease coming against us, and deliver us from His impending justified threat and have mercy on us.

We thank You, O Lord our Savior, that You have brought us once again to this auspicious day, to sing a hymn of victory to You, our benefactor and Savior. For behold, our leaders and all the congregation of the people, having gathered together, commemorate the wonderful and great event which Your right hand has accomplished in our days, so as to demonstrate that there is a day of the Lord upon everyone that is insolent and arrogant, a day of falling for all who are haughty and self-exalted; for You have shaken the glorious in Your might, and have crushed the proud and insolent with Your power. For this reason, Lord, on this day our whole Land is full of praises for You, and in rejoicing and gratitude we cry to You: Make Your paths known to us, O Lord, and teach us Your ways; direct us in Your path and guide all of us, both leaders and people, to Your truth; for many are the enemies surrounding us, but blessed are the people whose helper is the Lord their God. We also pray to You for the souls of our martyred brethren: those who fell in war, those who were slaughtered, and those who died in captivity or exile; may they dwell in blessedness and repose with the righteous; may their bones come to life again as green grass, so that both the living and those who have fallen asleep in the hope of resurrection may raise up a hymn of thanksgiving and doxology to You, the mighty King of the ages, for ever and ever.
