In Your kingdom. Remember us, O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [RSV]

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. [RSV]

When the robber had believed * that You the crucified were truly God, * he wholeheartedly and sincerely confessed You, * and he cried aloud to You, O Christ, “In Your kingdom, remember me.” [SD]

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

When You died upon the Cross, * O good Savior and the Giver of Life, * You revived us who had fallen through eating, * and You made us citizens again * of Paradise, O loving Lord. [SD]

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

You were nailed upon the Cross, * You who called yourself the true vine, O Christ; * and from You was distilled the drink of salvation, * that wine that gladdens the hearts of all * the faithful who sing Your praise. [SD]

For the Martyrs.

As you were beaten to death, * and your bodies were dismembered limb by limb, * you became an image of the Master’s slaughter. * Hence we call you blessed evermore, * O wise holy Martyrs of Christ. [SD]

On the Cross, the Son of God, * from the Father and the Holy Spirit * inseparable, endured His voluntary Passion, * whereby He delivered us from all * the passions that corrupted us. [SD]

Lady, you watched as our Life * willingly died on the tree of the Cross, * and you beat our breasts as your wept and lamented. * Therefore we all sing you sacred hymns * and call you blessed evermore. [SD]

Save, O Lord, Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting victory to the faithful over the enemy, and by Your Cross protecting Your commonwealth. [SD]

For the Saint.

Mode 4.

Having learnt kindness, and being always steady and sober, vested with a good conscience as befits a priest, you drew out from the Chosen Vessel the secrets of God. And having kept the faith, you have finished the fair race, O Hieromartyr Hierotheos; Intercede with Christ our God, entreating Him to save our souls. [SD]

The Apolytikion of the parish church is sung. Then:

Ὁ ὑψωθεὶς ἐν τῷ Σταυρῷ.

You who were lifted on the cross voluntarily, * O Christ our God, bestow Your tender compassions * upon Your new community to which You gave Your name. * Cause our faithful emperors to be glad in Your power, * granting them the victories against their adversaries. * And for an ally, Lord, may they have You, * peace as their armor, the trophy invincible. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at His holy mountain. [SAAS]

The reading is from Paul’s Letter to the Galatians.

Gal. 4:8 – 21

Brethren, when you did not know God, you were in bondage to beings that by nature are no gods; but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental principles, whose slaves you want to be once more? You observe days, and months, and seasons, and years! I am afraid I have labored over you in vain. Brethren, I beseech you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong; you know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first; and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. What has become of the satisfaction you felt? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? They make much of you, but for no good purpose; they want to shut you out, that you may make much of, and not only when I am present with you. My little children, with whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you! I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you. The Gospel

Friday of the 3rd Week of Luke

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

Lk. 7:31 – 35

The Lord said, “To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the market place and calling to one another, ‘We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep.’ For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine; and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say, ‘Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.” [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

You worked salvation in the midst of the earth, O Christ our God. [SAAS] Alleluia.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

DISMISSAL

May Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.

Strict: Refrain from meat, fish, oil, dairy, and eggs.
