God is the Lord, and He revealed Himself to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. [SAAS]

Verse 1: Give thanks to the Lord and call upon His holy name.

Εὐφραινέσθω τὰ οὐράνια, ἀγαλλιάσθω τὰ ἐπίγεια, ὅτι ἐποίησε κράτος ἐν βραχίονι αὐτοῦ, ὁ Κύριος· ἐπάτησε τῷ θανάτῳ τὸν θάνατον· πρωτότοκος τῶν νεκρῶν ἐγένετο· ἐκ κοιλίας ᾅδου ἐῤῥύσατο ἡμᾶς, καὶ παρέσχε τῷ κόσμῳ τὸ μέγα ἔλεος.

Let the heavens be glad. Let the earth rejoice exceedingly. For the Lord has shown strength with his arm. He trampled death by death. He became the first-born of the dead. Out of the belly of Hades, He has rescued us, and to the world He has granted the great mercy. [GOASD]

Save, O Lord, Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting victory to the faithful over the enemy, and by Your Cross protecting Your commonwealth. [GOA]

Remembering our all-holy, immaculate, most blessed, and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, with all the saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

Χριστὸς ἐκ νεκρῶν ἐγήγερται, ἡ ἀπαρχὴ τῶν κεκοιμημένων· ὁ Πρωτότοκος τῆς κτίσεως, καὶ δημιουργὸς πάντων τῶν γεγονότων, τὴν καταφθαρεῖσαν φύσιν τοῦ γένους ἡμῶν, ἐν ἑαυτῷ ἀνεκαίνισεν. Οὐκέτι θάνατε κυριεύεις· ὁ γὰρ τῶν ὅλων Δεσπότης, τὸ κράτος σου κατέλυσε.

Christ has been raised from the dead; He is the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. As the first-born of all creation and maker of all things that were made, in himself He renewed our human nature that had been ravaged. O Death, you no longer have dominion, for the Master of all has destroyed your power. [GOASD]

Σαρκὶ τοῦ θανάτου γευσάμενος Κύριε, τὸ πικρὸν τοῦ θανάτου, ἐξέτεμες τῇ ἐγέρσει σου, καὶ τὸν ἄνθρωπον κατʼ αὐτοῦ ἐνισχύσας, τῆς ἀρχαίας κατάρας τὴν ἧτταν ἀνακαλούμενος. Ὁ ὑπερασπιστὴς τῆς ζωῆς ἡμῶν, Κύριε δόξα σοι.

You tasted death in the flesh, O Lord. But by Your resurrection, You cut off its bitterness and strengthened humanity against it, by reversing the failure that resulted in the ancient curse. O Defender of our life, glory to You, O Lord! [GOASD]

We venerate the wood of Your Cross, O humane One, * for You, the Life of all, were nailed to it. * O Savior, You opened Paradise to the Robber who approached You with faith. * He was counted worthy of delight, confessing You, Remember me, O Lord. * Accept us as You accepted him, * for we now cry, We all have sinned * against Your compassion. Do not abandon us. [SD]

Τὸ ἀναλλοίωτον τὸ τῆς θεότητος, καὶ τὸ ἑκούσιον πάθος σου Κύριε, εἰς ἑαυτὸν καταπλαγείς, ὁ ᾅδης ἐπωδύρετο· Τρέμω τὴν τοῦ σώματος, μὴ φθαρεῖσαν ὑπόστασιν· βλέπω τὸν ἀόρατον, μυστικῶς πολεμοῦντά με· διὸ καὶ οὓς κατέχω κραυγάζουσι· Δόξα Χριστὲ τῇ ἀναστάσει σου.

You voluntarily endured Your suffering, * and Your divinity remained unchanged, O Lord. * Hades was terrified by this; and lamenting, it said to itself, * “I fear Him whose physical constitution is not destroyed. * I see the invisible One mystically waging war on me. * Now those whom I am holding are crying out, * ‘Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ!’” [GOASD]

We the believers now theologize about * the inexplicable, incomprehensible, * and hidden mystery of Your crucifixion and resurrection. * For death and the netherworld have been stripped of their spoils today, * and our human nature has now put on the imperishable. * And therefore in thanksgiving we cry aloud: * Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ. Τῶν Ἀγγέλων ὁ δῆμος, κατεπλάγη ὁρῶν σε, ἐν νεκροῖς λογισθέντα, τοῦ θανάτου δὲ Σωτήρ, τὴν ἰσχὺν καθελόντα, καὶ σὺν ἑαυτῷ τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἐγείραντα, καὶ ἐξ ᾍδου πάντας ἐλευθερώσαντα.

When the hosts of the Angels saw how You were accounted among the dead, they all marveled. You, O Savior, are the One who destroyed the might of death; and when You arose You raised Adam with yourself and from Hades liberated everyone. [SD]

“Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples?” Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried to the myrrh-bearing women. “See for yourselves the empty tomb and understand, that the Savior has risen from the sepulcher.”

Very early in the morning, the myrrh-bearing women were hastening to Your tomb lamenting. But the Angel appeared to them and uttered, “The time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. Go announce the Resurrection to the Apostles.”

When the myrrh-bearing women had come with their spices to Your sepulcher, O Savior, they heard the voice of an Angel clearly speaking to them, “Why do you account among the dead the One who lives? For as God, He has risen from the sepulcher.”

Giving birth to the Giver of life, O Virgin, you delivered Adam from sin, and to Eve you have rendered joy in place of sorrow. He who from you became incarnate, God and man, has directed to life him who fell from it.

Ὁ ὑψωθεὶς ἐν τῷ Σταυρῷ ἑκουσίως, τῇ ἐπωνύμῳ σου καινῇ πολιτείᾳ τοὺς οἰκτιρμούς σου δώρησαι, Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός· εὔφρανον ἐν τῇ δυνάμει σου τοὺς πιστοὺς βασιλεῖς ἡμῶν, νίκας χορηγῶν αὐτοῖς κατὰ τῶν πολεμίων· τὴν συμμαχίαν ἔχοιεν τὴν σήν, ὅπλον εἰρήνης, ἀήττητον τρόπαιον.

You who were lifted on the cross voluntarily, * O Christ our God, bestow Your tender compassions * upon Your new community to which You gave Your name. * Cause our faithful emperors to be glad in Your power, * granting them the victories against their adversaries. * And for an ally, Lord, may they have You, * peace as their armor, the trophy invincible. Of old the tree in the garden stripped us naked, * and by its taste did the enemy bring in death. * Now the tree of the Cross, which for all mankind is bearing * the garment of life, was planted upon the earth, * and therefore is all the world filled with every joy. * As we see it exalted now, let us, O peoples, cry aloud * together unto God in faith: * Full of glory is Your house, O Lord. In days of old, Moses transformed with wood ⁄ the bitter wells in the wilderness, ⁄ prefiguring the bringing of the gentiles ⁄ to the true faith through the Cross. [OCA]

Νοτίου θηρὸς ἐν σπλάγχνοις, παλάμας Ἰωνᾶς, σταυροειδῶς διεκπετάσας, τὸ σωτήριον πάθος, προδιετύπου σαφῶς· ὅθεν τριήμερος ἐκδύς, τὴν ὑπερκόσμιον ἀνάστασιν ὑπεζωγράφησε, τοῦ σαρκὶ προσπαγέντος Χριστοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ τριημέρῳ ἐγέρσει, τὸν κόσμον φωτίσαντος.

In the belly of the sea beast * the prophet Jonah prayed with his arms extended crosswise; * thus he clearly prefigured the saving Passion of Christ. * When after three days he emerged, * he was depicting the supernal resurrection from the dead * of Christ God, who was physically nailed to the Cross * and by His third-day arising illumined the universe. [SD]

Bent with age and wasted by sickness, ⁄ Jacob was straightened when he crossed his hands, ⁄ thus showing the power of the life-giving Cross. ⁄ For God Who was crucified on it in the flesh ⁄ thus rewrote the letter of the old law that was in shadows, ⁄ and drove away the soul-destroying disease of error. [OCA]

By laying his hands crosswise on the heads of the young ⁄ holy Israel signified that the people serving under the law ⁄ should for a time have the honor due to the first born. ⁄ When suspected of error in this, he did not change the life-giving figure: ⁄ For, he cried, the newly-planted people of Christ our God ⁄ shall take the higher place, strengthened by the Cross! Let heaven and earth join in dance today and in harmony extol Christ our God, for He raised the prisoners from their tombs. All creation celebrates together, offering worthy songs to our Redeemer, the Creator of all. For today, with himself as the Giver of Life, He raises people from the netherworld and lifts them up to heaven. He quashes the enemy’s haughtiness and smashes the gates of Hades, by the divine power of His authority. [GOASD]

Σταυρὸν χαράξας Μωσῆς, ἐπʼ εὐθείας ῥάβδῳ, τὴν Ἐρυθρὰν διέτεμε, τῷ Ἰσραὴλ πεζεύσαντι· τὴν δὲ ἐπιστρεπτικῶς, Φαραὼ τοῖς ἅρμασι, κροτήσας ἥνωσεν, ἐπʼ εὔρους διαγράψας, τὸ ἀήττητον ὅπλον· διὸ Χριστῷ ᾄσωμεν, τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν ὅτι δεδόξασται.

Moses prefigured the Cross. * Lifting up the rod, he stretched out his hand and split the Sea for Israel to cross on land. * Then he stretched it out again, * and the sea returned and covered Pharaoh’s chariots. * The Cross was thus portrayed as our invincible armor. * So let us sing to the Lord, * Christ our God, for He is greatly glorified. In the belly of the sea beast * the prophet Jonah prayed with his arms extended crosswise; * thus he clearly prefigured the saving Passion of Christ. * When after three days he emerged, * he was depicting the supernal resurrection from the dead * of Christ God, who was physically nailed to the Cross * and by His third-day arising illumined the universe. Ἔκνοον πρόσταγμα τυράννου δυσσεβοῦς, λαοὺς ἐκλόνησε, πνέον ἀπειλῆς καὶ δυσφημίας θεοστυγοῦς. Ὅμως τρεῖς Παῖδας οὐκ ἐδειμάτωσε, θυμὸς θηριώδης, οὐ πῦρ βρόμιον· ἀλλʼ ἀντηχούντι δροσοβόλῳ πνεύματι, πυρὶ συνόντες ἔψαλλον· Ὁ ὑπερύμνητος, τῶν πατέρων καὶ ἡμῶν, Θεὸς εὐλογητὸς εἶ.

The impious tyrant’s preposterous decree disturbed the populace, * breathing threats and blasphemous pronouncements hateful to God. * His brutal anger did not intimidate * the three Servants, nor did the consuming fire. * But when the dew-laden breeze whistled against the fire, they joined it and together sang, * “Blessed are You, O Lord. You are highly praised, O God, the God of our fathers.” [GOASD]
