ON MONDAY EVENING

At, Lord, I have cried, Prosomia.

Stichera for the Master.

δʹ.

Mode pl. 4. What a paradoxal.

Whom do you resemble, O my soul, * as you are passing the days * of your life in great indolence, * heavy with the deepest sleep * of intractable lethargy? * Wretch that you are, quickly run to meet the Lord, * and fall down prostrate to Him who knows all things. * Cry out, and supplicate * that He give you time in order to repent * before you become the fuel for the unquenchable fire. [SD]

You know the weakness of human flesh, * as our Creator and Lord; * as our Maker, You thoroughly * understand the sluggishness * of our nature, O Christ our God. * I pray You, quiet the surging in my heart, * and grant tranquility to my humble soul. * Grant me correction of * my unseemly deeds, and from eternal fire * rescue me, for only You are most compassionate. [SD]

Additional Stichera. For the Forerunner. Same Melody.

You are the offspring of chastity, the barren woman’s son, * and the pride of humanity, * and the Master’s Forerunner, O all-laudable Baptist John. * You are the holy protector of my soul. * I pray you grant me your help forevermore * and intercede for me, * so that I be rescued from the wicked schemes * of the evil serpent to attack and injure me. [GOASD]

Never abandon your votary; * never reject me, I pray, * so that I may extol and praise, * venerate and glorify, * and devotedly celebrate * your bright, divine name, synonymous with grace, * O holy Prophet, Forerunner, Baptist John. * Under the wings of your * venerable intercessions evermore * shelter me, and guard me from * evils of every kind. [SD]

Lady Theotokos, we cry out saluting you: Rejoice! * You are God’s most pure dwelling place. * Rejoice! Divine chariot * of the Logos, where God was held. * Rejoice! O palace that God made for himself. * Rejoice! O treasure that God provides to us. * Animate bridal room * of our God. The holy Table and the Ark * symbolize you, for in you the Holy Spirit dwelt.

The Lord will hear me when I cry to Him.

At the Aposticha.

δʹ.

Aposticha. Mode pl. 4. For compunction.

Angels unceasingly extol You the King and Lord and Master. But I, like the Publican, am bowed as I implore You: O God, be gracious to me and save me. [SD]

Verse: I lift my eyes to You, who dwell in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hands of their masters, as the eyes of the maidservant look to the hands of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God until He shall have compassion on us. [SAAS]

O soul of mine, since you are immortal, let not mundane concerns inundate you. Come to your senses, and pray to your Benefactor: “O God, be gracious to me and save me.” [SD]

Verse: Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us, for we are greatly filled with contempt; our soul is greatly filled with it. We are a disgrace to those who prosper, and a contempt to the arrogant. [SAAS]

MATINS

After the first Psalter reading, Kathismata. For compunction.

δʹ.

Mode pl. 4.

O Lord, I beg You look at my low condition with a compassionate expression. For my life is passing little by little, and I have not done anything to merit salvation. Therefore I implore You: O Lord, look at my low condition with a compassionate expression, and save me. [GOASD]

By conceiving the wisdom.

O my soul, keep the thought of that fearful day * in the front of your mind, and be vigilant; * and trimming your oil lamp, keep it lit with the virtues. * For you know not the day nor the hour the cry will come * to you specifically, saying, “Behold, your Bridegroom is here!” * Therefore, O my soul, always watch lest you slumber * and be left outside knocking like those five foolish maidens. * But continue in vigilance, * so that you may meet Christ God with abundant oil, and He give to you * the heavenly bridal room of His glory divine. [GOASD]

Duty-bound I present you this hymn of praise, * like the widow’s two cents, out of gratitude, * O Lady, because of all your benevolent favors. * For you are my shelter and likewise my help in need; * from troubles and temptations you ever deliver me. * Therefore being rescued from the things that afflict me, * as though from a furnace fire, from my heart I cry out to you, * Theotokos help me, I pray, * interceding with your Son and God * that He grant forgiveness of offenses * to those who faithfully worship your Son, O immaculate one. [SD]

After the second Psalter reading, Kathismata. For compunction.

As if the Judge were present, be anxious, O my soul, and keep in mind the thought of the hour of that fearful day. For the judgment is merciless to those who showed no mercy. So before the end cry aloud, “Spare me, O my Savior, for You are supremely benevolent.” [GOASD]

Like the sinful woman, I come to You to be forgiven, and instead of perfume, I offer You my heartfelt tears, O Christ God, so that You will pity me, as You did her, O Savior, and grant to me forgiveness of sins. For like her, I cry to You, “Free me from the mud of my sinful deeds!” [GOASD]

I fell into the ocean of terrible depression * because of all my deeds that were wicked and unlawful. * Now I am at a loss, and desperation possesses me. * O Lady Theotokos, in your compassion save me and deliver me. * For we know you to be the one who helps * and cleanses sinners for salvation.

O Life of all, You rose.

My soul, since you have wasted your life, being carefree, * arise now from your torpor and look to your repentance. * Bitterly weep with feeling, lest in the next life you grieve to no avail. * Shudder now as you ponder * the Second Coming of Christ the righteous Judge. * Before the judgment comes convict yourself, * and thus escape a just conviction. [SD]

For the Martyrs.

Holy Martyrs, you were shown to be spiritual luminaries; for by faith you ended the fogginess of error, you brightened the lamps of our souls, and with glory you entered the celestial bridal hall with the Bridegroom. Now we pray you entreat Him to save our souls. [SD]

O Believers, let us magnify the Theotokos in hymns. She is the unshakable support of the Faith, and the venerable gift to our souls. “Rejoice! for in your womb you contained the Rock of life. Rejoice! as the hope of all the earth, and the help of those in trouble! Rejoice, O unwedded Bride!” [SD]

When I will appear at Your fearful and just tribunal, * and the record of all my deeds will undergo an audit, * what defense will I proffer, O Logos? * Spare me and forgive me then, O Lord my God. [SD]

As the voice of the Word, wise and holy Baptist, * guide to God the voice of my prayer, and save me from the evil * of demons and malice of bad people, * so that I may call you blessed as is right. [SD]

Forerunner, I pray you to keep me in your protection. * Nourish me with the immortal food of Christ’s commandments * and the drink of life, O Baptist and Prophet, * and to God present me as one of the saved. [SD]

O all-holy Lady, and glorious all-pure Virgin, * join the holy Baptist to pray in earnest for your servants * to your Son and our King to save us from disasters, * as we ever call you blessed faithfully. [SD]

At the Aposticha of Lauds.

δʹ.

Aposticha. Mode pl. 4. For compunction.

When I bring to mind the many terrible things I have done, and when I think about that terrifying judgment, I am overcome by trembling, and I turn to You, my benevolent God. So I pray to You, the only sinless One, do not despise me; but before the end, give compunction to my humble soul and save me. [SD]

Verse: We were filled with Your mercy in the morning, and in all our days we greatly rejoiced and were glad; gladden us in return for the days You humbled us, for the years we saw evil things. And behold Your servants and Your works, and guide their sons. [SAAS]

Mstari Asubuhi tumejazwa na huruma yako, Ee Bwana; [[SWA]]

Give me tears, O Lord, as once You did to the sinful woman, and grant that I may wet Your feet, which freed me from the way of error, and like her to offer You, as fragrant ointment, a pure life that is built on repentance; so that I, too, may hear those cherished words of Yours: “Your faith has saved you, go in peace.” [SD]

Verse: And let the brightness of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper for us the works of our hands. [SAAS]

[[SWA]]

For the Martyrs.

You competed strongly, O saints of God. * You courageously endured when the unjust tormented you; * before governors and rulers you declared your faith in Christ. * And now that you have passed on from this earthly life, * you still act in the world through mighty miracles: * you cure the sick and you heal the lame * from their diseases and injuries. * So intercede, we entreat you, that our souls be saved.

O Virgin and holy Theotokos, I take refuge in your protection. I am confident of my salvation, for you, O Pure One, are able to help me. [SD]

The Beatitudes. Mode pl. 4.

Savior of the world, remember us Your servants * as upon the Cross You remembered the Robber, * only compassionate Christ, and account us worthy * of inheriting Your heavenly Rule. [SD]

Christ our God, You are an ocean of compassion. * I pray You to dry up the seas of my offenses;* wash them away with the teardrops of my compunction, and wholly purify me, merciful Lord. [SD]

Holy Baptist John, you baptized in the waters * Christ of old. Now I am drowning in the sea storm * of sinful passions. So guide me into the harbor * of true repentance, by your prayers for me. [SD]

With your holy blood, O Martyrs, you extinguished * the unholy fire of the worshiping of idols; * and now each day you pour out streams of wondrous healings, * curing all kinds of ills and suffering. [SD]

Unoriginate Father and Son and Spirit, * I entreat you now to end the chronic passions * of my soul, and to save me Your humble servant, * by the entreaties of the Baptist John. [SD]

Deliver us from all the shameful sinful passions, * also from the torments of punishment in Hades, * by your entreaties, immaculate Theotokos, * for us who honor you and call you blest. [SD]
