GREAT VESPERS

After the introductory Psalm and the first Kathisma of the Psalter, at Lord, I have cried, we use 10 verses, and we sing 7 or 6 or 4 Resurrectional Stichera, and for the Saint of the day 3 or 4 or 6 if the it is a celebrated Saint.

Resurrectional Stichera from the Octoechos. Mode pl. 2.

Possessing mastery over Hades, O Christ, You were lifted on the Cross. You went to those sitting in the darkness of death, and You raised them with yourself, who were free among the dead, the fountain of life who shine Your light. O almighty Savior, have mercy on us. [GOASD]

After trampling death, Christ rose today, even as He said He would. He gave the world great joy. Now we all sing this hymn of praise, and we say to Him, “You are the fountain of life, the unapproachable light. O almighty Savior, have mercy on us.” [GOASD]

Where could we sinners flee from You, O Lord, who are present in all creation? Into heaven? But that is where You dwell. Into Hades? You trampled death there. Into the depths of the sea? Even there Your hand would hold us, O Master. To You we flee for refuge. Casting ourselves before You, we implore You, who rose from the dead: Have mercy on us. [GOASD]

Who can not call you blessed, O all-holy Virgin? Who can not extol your extraordinary childbirth? To Him pray fervently, O noble and all-blessed Lady, and implore Him to have mercy on our souls. [GOASD]

Crushing the gates of bronze and smashing the bars in Hades, as God almighty, You resurrected the fallen human race. So now we sing Your praises and say: O Lord, who rose from the dead, glory to You! [GOASD]

Wishing to restore us from our primitive fall, Christ was nailed to a cross and laid in a tomb. The Myrrh-bearing Women were weeping as they looked for Him, and as they grieved they said, “Alas! O Savior of all! How is it possible? You consented to occupy a tomb, then from there You let yourself be stolen! How were You transported? Where is Your life-giving body hidden? O Master, as You promised, let us see You again, and bring an end to our tearful mourning.” As they were thus lamenting, an Angel said to them, “End your lamentation. Go and tell the Apostles that the Lord has risen, and He has granted to the world forgiveness and the great mercy.” [GOASD]

Verse: Holiness is proper to Your house, O Lord, unto length of days. [SAAS]

You were crucified, O Christ, as You willed, and You plundered death while You were buried. Then on the third day You rose as God in glory, and to the world You granted never-ending life and the great mercy. [GOASD]

My Creator and Redeemer, Christ the Lord, clothed himself in me and was born from your womb, and He freed Adam from the ancient curse. And now, O all-pure one, we address you as the truly virgin Mother of God, and unceasingly we sing to you the Angel’s salutation: O Lady, Rejoice! You are our defense and protection and salvation of our souls.

Resurrectional Apolytikion.

When the angelic powers appeared at Your tomb, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary, who was seeking Your immaculate body. Unassailed by Hades, You divested it of spoils. Then You met the Virgin. You granted life. O Lord, risen from the dead, glory to You! [GOASD]

Theotokion.

You who called her who was blessed among women Your Mother, proceeded to the Passion, of Your own will, O Lord. On the Cross, You shined Your light, seeking Adam, as You wished; and You said to the Angels, “Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that was lost.” You have arranged everything wisely. Canon for the Trinity

Mode pl. 2. Ode i. N/M (When they had walked.)

We extol three divine hypostases of single nature, identical essence, our good and humane God, who grants us forgiveness of offenses. [GOASD]

Only Lord, superessential, thrice-radiant in persons and one Godhead, give us understanding, and count us worthy of Your divine illumination. [GOASD]

Paul, who was like the bridal escort of the Church of the Gentiles, taught her to worship You, one God in three hypostases, from whom and through whom and in whom all things came to be. [GOASD]

Theotokion.

O Theotokos, the spiritual Sun came forth from your womb, and He shined on us with rays of the thrice-radiant Godhead. We devoutly extol Him, and we call you blessed. [GOASD]

O thrice-radiant God, You ordered the heavenly Ranks, and You equipped them to sing thrice-holy hymns. We pray You accept us when we sing with them the praises of Your goodness. [GOASD]

As we extol the only immutable, triple, consubstantial, single Godhead, we earnestly entreat You to send down to us forgiveness of our many sins. [GOASD]

O Father, the unoriginate Nous, O consubstantial Logos of God, O good and right Holy Spirit, guard all who faithfully extol Your dominion, O compassionate Lord. [GOASD]

O pure Virgin, my God became man by nature in your womb. He arrested the spread of corruption, and He alone freed our first ancestors from the ancient guilty verdict. [GOASD]

O thrice-radiant Unity, we implore You exalt our minds, and uplift the souls and hearts of those who extol You, and count us worthy of Your illumination and splendor. [GOASD]

O only undepictable and unchanging Trinity, transform me and transfigure me from every vice to virtue, and make me resplendent with Your radiance. [GOASD]

O Unity in three hypostases, You first conceived of them and then with wisdom gave existence to the ministering ranks of the Angels. Accept me as I join them praising of Your benevolence. [GOASD]

O ever-virgin Theotokos, it was in your womb that the connaturally uncreated and eternal God assumed created human nature and refashioned it. [GOASD]

Ode v. N/M (With Your divine light.)

O Master, as we consider the divine nature, that it is providential and able to preserve and save all things, and thrice-radiant and one, we rise early in the morning to You, praying that You forgive our sins. [GOASD]

O unoriginate Father and God, and co-eternal Son, and Holy Spirit, the monarchical Trinity, we pray You strengthen us who sing Your praise, and deliver us from all abuse and affliction. [GOASD]

O Sun of glory, train me with Your theurgic radiance, and ever guide me to be well-pleasing to Your Godhead in three hypostases, and make me a partaker of Your Kingdom on high. [GOASD]

Theotokion.

O immutable Logos of God, You hold and preserve all things with your almighty hand. Guard and preserve us who are glorifying You, at the intercession of the Mother of God who gave birth to You. [GOASD]

Ode vi. N/M (I see when my life.)

O thrice-radiant Godhead, grant wisdom and understanding to those who sing Your praise, and count them all worthy to be enlightened with the rays of the illuminating beauty of Your benevolence. [GOASD] (2)

O undivided Light, in essence thrice-radiant, almighty, and unapproachable: shine in the hearts of those who faithfully praise Your dominion, and launch them towards Your divine love. [GOASD]

O Ever-Virgin, the Lord who upholds all things clearly dwelt in you, and He taught humanity to worship one thrice-radiant essence of the Godhead. [GOASD]

O Unity thrice-radiant in hypostases, grant me a strong mind, that I may keep and obey Your divine commandments, and that I may always sing to You with faith: Blessed are You, the God of our fathers. [GOASD]

You are extolled as identical in nature, God ineffably single, and in persons having the number of the Trinity. Preserve us, one and all, from various temptations and calamities. [GOASD]

O Trinity, You present the difference in hypostatic properties simply and without confusion, clearly unchanging in nature. We glorify You, one God in essence, consubstantial, and co-eternal. [GOASD]

Theotokion.

O immaculate Virgin, our superessential God truly assumed our nature from your pure womb; and He taught all to sing: “Blessed are You, the God of our fathers.” [GOASD]

I implore You grant me forgiveness of offenses, and free me from the various passions, O consubstantial Trinity and Unity in three hypostases, that I may glorify You unto all the ages. [GOASD]

It is said You delight in mercy, O merciful God. O thrice-radiant Unity and consubstantial Trinity, have mercy on all who glorify your majesty. [GOASD]

Co-eternal light of eternal light, the Logos was begotten of the Father, from whom the light, the Spirit, proceeds. In faith we glorify the Trinity, exalting beyond measure, unto all the ages. [GOASD]

Theotokion.

O immaculate Virgin, you gave birth to the Physician of humanity, the almighty Logos, Christ the Lord, who heals the ancestral wound of all who exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages. [GOASD]

Ode ix. N/M (It is impossible.)

O Master, the ranks of Cherubim, are unable to gaze at the glory of Your beauty. So they cover themselves with their wings and unceasingly sing the thrice-holy hymn, and they glorify Your single Godhead’s dominion in three hypostases. [GOASD]

O never-setting Sun, only all-merciful God in three hypostases, grant Your radiance to the hearts of Your servants. Illumine our souls, and free us from many offenses, and count us worthy of Your immortal life. [GOASD]

O Godhead, coequal, tri-solar, and light-giving light, illumine those who sing of You with faith, and deliver them from dark misdeeds. Count them worthy of Your luminous mansions, O God supremely good. [GOASD]

O all-lauded Virgin, your Son fashioned humanity of old with wisdom, and when it was corrupted He refashioned it through you. And with the never-setting brightness of the divine light, He filled all who glorify you evermore as the true Theotokos. [GOASD]

The sepulcher had been opened, and Hades was lamenting. And Mary cried aloud to the Apostles in hiding, “You laborers of the vineyard, go out and proclaim the message of the resurrection: The Lord has risen and granted to the world the great mercy.” [GOASD]

Standing by Your sepulcher was Mary Magdalene, O Lord, and she was weeping loudly; and mistaking You for the gardener, she said to You, “Where have you laid Him who is everlasting life? Where have you hidden Him who sits enthroned upon the Cherubim? Out of fear, those who guarded Him became like dead men. Either give my Lord to me or cry aloud along with me, ‘You were among the dead and raised the dead. Glory to You!’” [GOASD]

Gideon is given a sign of your conception, and David gives us a description of your childbirth, O all-lauded Theotokos. The Logos came down into your womb like the dew on the fleece; and thus without seed you, the holy earth, brought forth the world’s salvation, who is Christ our God, O Lady full of grace. [GOASD]

Life was placed in the tomb, and a seal was placed on the stone. The soldiers were guarding Christ like a sleeping king. Then the Lord struck His enemies and stunned them, as He awoke and rose. [GOASD]

Jonah was a sign of Your burial, and Symeon revealed Your rising as God, O immortal Lord. In the tomb as a dead man, You went down into Hades, and You broke down its gates. Then You rose from the dead without decay as the Master, for the salvation of the world, O Christ our God, giving light to those who sat in darkness. [GOASD]

O Virgin Theotokos, implore Your Son, Christ our God, who voluntarily was nailed to the Cross, and who rose from the dead; and entreat Him to save our souls. [GOASD]

By your voluntary, life-giving death, O Christ, You smashed the gates of Hades as God, and You opened to us the ancient Garden of Paradise. Then rising from the dead, You delivered our life from destruction. [GOASD]

I lift my eyes to You in heaven, O Logos. Show me mercy, so that I may live in You. [GOASD]

Have mercy on us who are the object of contempt, O Logos, and make us Your useful vessels. [GOASD]

In the Holy Spirit is the cause of the salvation of all. When He blows on anyone as befits His nature, He quickly uplifts them from anything mundane, He gives them wings, He gives them growth, He gives them high position. [GOASD]

If the Lord had not been with us, none of us could have withstood a single battle with the foe. Those who are victorious are from here exalted. [GOASD]

Let not my soul be caught like a sparrow in their teeth, O Logos. Woe is me! How shall I be delivered from the enemy, enamored with sin as I am? [GOASD]

In the Holy Spirit deification is possible for all, good pleasure, understanding, peace, and blessing. He has the same energies as the Father and the Logos. [GOASD]

Kontakion. When You had fulfilled.

Christ God, the Giver of Life, resurrected all who had ever died, from the dismal caverns, with His vivifying hand, and He granted resurrection to our mortal human nature. For He is the Savior of all, the resurrection and the life, and God of the universe. [GOASD]

Oikos.

O Giver of Life, we the faithful extol and venerate Your cross and burial; for You, O immortal, omnipotent God, overpowered and vanquished the netherworld. You crushed the gates of Hades, O God, and You destroyed the power of death. Now we, born on earth, with fervor sing praise to You who rose from the dead, destroyed the power of the murderous foe, resurrected everyone who believed in You, rescued the world from the sting of the serpent, and as the ultimate strong man freed us from the foe’s deception. From now on we solemnly sing the praises of Your resurrection, by which You saved us, as God of the universe. [GOASD]

In the furnace the Lord’s Angel saved the pious men, * blowing through it a dew-laden breeze, * while Chaldean men were completely burned, at God’s command, * persuading the tyrant to confess * and cry aloud, “O God of our fathers, blessed are You.” [SD]

As the sun beheld Your Passion, Lord, it mournfully * covered itself in a robe of gloom, * and it made its light go dark in the middle of the day. * As darkness was over all the earth, * it cried aloud, “O God of our fathers, blessed are You.” [SD]

O Word of God, You did not participate * in sinful passions when You met the passions, becoming flesh. * But You free from passions all humanity, Savior, for at Your Passion * You had become for us * sin and passion, only Lord almighty and impassible. [SD]

Though You accepted the ruin that is death, * You kept Your body free of putrefaction and all decay. * Your divine and vivifying soul that went down * into Hades, O Master, * was not abandoned there. * But as if from slumber You arose and also raised us with You. [SD]

O Lord, Your Cross is life and resurrection for us Your people. And now that we trust in it, we extol You, our God who has risen. Have mercy on us. [GOASD]

O Lord, Your burial has opened Paradise to the human race. And now that we have been set free from death and decay, we extol You, our God who has risen. Have mercy on us. [GOASD]

Let us extol the Father and the Spirit, and also Christ, who rose from the dead; and to Him let us cry aloud, “You are our life and resurrection. Have mercy on us.” [GOASD]

You rose within three days from the tomb, * O Christ, as holy Scripture says, * also raising our progenitor with You. * Now all mankind together * forever glorifies You, and we extol Your resurrection, O Lord. [GOASD]

O Lord, the mystery of Your resurrection is great and awesome. You destroyed death by death, in order to free Adam; and You came forth from the sepulcher, like a bridegroom from his bridal chamber. Therefore in heaven the Angels celebrate, and on earth we human beings glorify Your compassion towards us, O benevolent Lord. [GOASD]

O villainous leaders of the Jews, where are the seals, and where is the money that you gave to the soldiers? The treasure was not stolen, but He rose, like a strong man. You were put to shame, for you denied Christ the Lord of glory, who suffered and was buried, and who rose from the dead. As for us, let us worship Him. [GOASD]

The tomb had been sealed. So how were you robbed, O Jewish leaders? After all, you posted guards and affixed the seals. And yet while the doors were shut, the King came forth. Either produce Him as dead, or worship Him as God, and join us in singing, “Glory to Your Cross and Your resurrection, O Lord!” [GOASD]

The Myrrh-bearing Women came to Your life-bearing tomb, O Lord, and they were lamenting. They brought spices with them, seeking to anoint Your immaculate body. But what they found was a dazzling Angel, sitting on the stone. And he addressed them and said, “Why do you weep for Him, who from His side gushed forth life for the world? Why do you seek as a mere mortal in the tomb the Immortal One? Go quickly and announce to His Disciples the universal joy of His glorious resurrection.” We pray you, O Savior, by Your resurrection illumine us, and grant to us forgiveness and the great mercy. [GOASD]

You are supremely blessed, O Virgin Theotokos. For through Him who from you became incarnate, Hades has been captured, and Adam has been called back; the curse has been killed, and Eve has been freed; death has been put to death, and we have been brought back to life. Therefore we extol Him and cry out, “O Christ our God, You are blessed, for so was Your good pleasure. Glory to You!” [GOASD]

Through a tree was Adam tricked, but You saved him * through a tree, and You saved the robber as well * who cried to You, Lord: In Your kingdom remember me. [SD]

After smashing Hades’ bars and gates, O Savior, * as the Giver of life You raised all the dead, * who shouted: Glory to Your resurrection, O Lord. [SD]
