GREAT VESPERS

After the introductory Psalm and the first Kathisma of the Psalter, at Lord, I have cried, we use 10 verses, and we sing 7 or 6 or 4 Resurrectional Stichera, and for the Saint of the day 3 or 4 or 6 if the it is a celebrated Saint.

Resurrectional Stichera from the Octoechos. Mode 1.

Accept our evening prayers, O holy Lord; and grant us forgiveness of sins. For You alone have shown the resurrection in the world. [GOASD]

Encircle Zion, all you peoples, and embrace her; and there give glory to Him who rose from the dead. For He is our God, who redeemed us from our iniquities. [GOASD]

Come, all you peoples, let us extol and worship Christ, and let us glorify His resurrection from the dead. For He is our God, who redeemed the world from the enemy’s deception. [GOASD]

Additional Stichera by Anatolios.

Be glad, O heavens! Sound the trumpet, you foundations of the earth! Shout with gladness, you mountains! For, behold, Emmanuel has nailed our sins to the Cross; and as the One who gives life, He has resurrected Adam and put death to death, in His benevolence towards humanity. [GOASD]

Voluntarily, the Lord was physically crucified for us, and He suffered and was buried, and He rose from the dead. Let us extol Him and say to Him, “Fix Your Church in Orthodoxy, O Christ, and grant us to live in peace, for You are good and benevolent towards humanity.” [GOASD]

Unworthy as we are, we visit Your sepulcher, which held You who are Life, O Christ our God, and we offer up our hymns in praise of Your ineffable compassion. For You, the sinless One, accepted crucifixion and death, in order to give resurrection to the world, in Your benevolence towards humanity. [GOASD]

As the Father, so the Logos is unoriginate and eternal. He came forth from the Virgin’s womb ineffably. For us He accepted crucifixion and death voluntarily, and He rose in glory. Let us extol Him and say to Him, “O Lord and Giver of life, glory to You, the Savior of our souls!” [GOASD]

Glory, for the Saint, if celebrated. Both now, the following Theotokion. Otherwise,

Καὶ νῦν.

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Let us extol the Virgin Mary, the glory of the universe. She had human parents and became the mother of the Master. She is the gateway to heaven, the song of the bodiless hosts, and the jewel of the faithful. For she became like heaven, a temple of the Godhead. She broke down the dividing wall of hostility and introduced the One who is our peace, and she opened the kingdom. Now as we hold on to her, the anchor of the Faith, we have as our champion the Lord who was born from her. So take courage; take courage, O people of God. For He himself, as the Almighty One, will fight the enemies. [GOASD]

After the Entrance and “Gladsome Light,” the appointed Monk make the usual bow to the Superior, and he announced the day’s

βʹ.

Prokeimenon. Mode pl. 2.

The Lord reigns; He clothed Himself with majesty.

Verse: The Lord clothed and girded Himself with power. [SAAS]

Verse: And He established the world, which shall not be moved. [SAAS]

Then the usual Ektenia, the prayer, “O Lord, keep us this evening…” and after the Exclamation, we sing the Idiomelon of the Saint of the Monastery and process to the Narthex. After the usual prayers of the Lity, we return to the Nave and sing the Resurrectional Aposticha.

Mode 1.

We were freed from the passions by Your Passion, O Christ; and we were redeemed from destruction by Your resurrection. Glory to You, O Lord! [GOASD]

Additional Aposticha by St. John of Damascus. These hymns and the Resurrectional Aposticha of the other modes have as an acrostic the Greek alphabet. The eight Theotokia have a separate acrostic in Greek, “By John. Amen.”

Verse: The Lord reigns; He clothed Himself with majesty; the Lord clothed and girded Himself with power. [SAAS]

Let all creation rejoice and let the heavens be glad! And let the nations clap their hands with joy! For Christ our Savior has nailed our sins to the Cross; He put death to death, and He has given us the gift of life. He resurrected fallen Adam and the whole human race, as our benevolent God. [GOASD]

Verse: And He established the world, which shall not be moved. [SAAS]

Incomprehensible King of heaven and earth, in Your benevolence You willingly were crucified. When Hades encountered You below, it was embittered, but the souls of the righteous rejoiced as they welcomed You. Adam rose when He saw You, his Creator, in the netherworld. Oh the marvel! How did You who are the life of all experience death? You did so for You willed to illumine the world, which sings aloud to You and says, “Glory to You, O Lord who rose from the dead!” [GOASD]

Verse: Holiness is proper to Your house, O Lord, unto length of days. [SAAS]

The Myrrh-bearing Women brought their ointments, and they went with haste to mourn at the sepulcher. They did not find Your immaculate body; but from the Angel they learned of the unprecedented and extraordinary marvel. Then they went and told the Disciples, “The Lord has risen and granted the world the great mercy!” [GOASD]

Glory, for the Saint, if there is one. Otherwise,

Καὶ νῦν.

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Behold, Isaiah’s prophecy has been fulfilled: you, a virgin, gave birth. After childbirth you remained the same as you were prior to childbirth; for the One whom you gave birth to was God, and therefore nature became new. And now, O Mother of God, please do not overlook the entreaties that we your servants bring to you in your church; but rather as the one who held the compassionate Lord in your arms, have compassion on us who pray to you, and intercede with Him to save our souls. [GOASD]

Resurrectional Apolytikion.

The stone having been sealed by the Pharisees and chief priests, * and Your all-immaculate body being guarded by soldiers, * You rose on the third day, O Lord and Savior, granting life unto the world. * Then the powers of the heavens cried out to You, O Giver of Life, and shouted, * “Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ! * Glory to Your eternal rule! * Glory to Your plan for saving us, only benevolent God!” [GOASD]

Theotokion.

When Gabriel had said to you, “Rejoice!” blessed Virgin, * and you had voiced your assent, the Lord of all became incarnate * in you, who became the holy Ark, * as righteous King David said of old. * You carried your Creator, and thus your womb was wider than the heavens. * Glory to Him who dwelt inside of you! * Glory to Him who came forth from You! * Glory to Him who through your childbirth has set us free! [GOASD]

And the rest of the vigil.

ON SUNDAY MIDNIGHT OFFICE

Canon for the Trinity

By Metrophanes of Smyrna.

ᾨδὴ αʹ.

Mode 1. Ode i. N/M (Glorified in strength.)

The Seraphim unceasingly glorify the One source in three hypostases, unoriginate, everlasting, creator of all, incomprehensible; and every tongue faithfully sings hymns to honor the Trinity. [SD]

You fashioned man of old and made it according to Your image, and You gave it mind and reason and spirit, so that You might show people Your single Godhead with triple splendor, in Your benevolence. [SD]

O Father, You said to Your co-equal Son and Spirit, “Come, let us go down and confuse their tongues.” Thus from the beginning You manifested the single dominion in three divine hypostases, [SD]

Theotokion.

Wise men of old prophesied in images that the unbegotten Father is Nous, the consubstantial Son is Logos, and the Holy Spirit is the One who in the Virgin wrought the incarnation of the Logos. [SD]

ᾨδὴ γʹ.

Ode iii. N/M (As You are the only One.)

You revealed in figure the unadulterated theology, when You appeared clearly to Abraham of old: Godhead, one nature, three hypostases. O God the sole ruler and triple Sun, we faithfully extol You. [SD]

O Father, the Son was divinely begotten of You, without change; He shone forth from You, light from light, in no way different. And the divine Spirit proceeded from You as light. We faithfully worship and glorify the glory of one God in three hypostases. [SD]

The spiritual beings glorify the Trinity, supernatural Unity, ineffably incomprehensible; and they shout their never silent praise in thrice holy songs. We join them in praising the Lord in three hypostases. [SD]

Theotokion.

O Mother of God, He who is beyond time came forth from you in history. He who is without visible form became like us. He taught us about the one nature and lordship of the Father, the Son and the Spirit. Therefore we glorify you. [SD]

Kathisma. Mode 1. The soldiers keeping watch.

All people born on earth, being fearful and faithful, * let us today adore the supremely divine might, * the Father and Son and right Holy Spirit, the Trinity, * uncreated and equal in honor and glory, * glorified on high by ranks of bodiless Angels, * And come let us praise the Lord. [SD]

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Direct us in the way of repentance, O Lady. * We frequently depart from the path into evils, * provoking your Son and Lord, the transcendently good and kind. * Blessed Mother and all-holy pure Virgin Mary, * dwelling place of God, you are the hope and the refuge * for those who are desperate. [SD]

ᾨδὴ δʹ.

Ode iv. N/M (Habakkuk the Prophet.)

O tri-solar Godhead, shine in me the splendor of Your divine radiance, so that the eyes of my heart may imagine the beauty of Your incomprehensible and illuminating divine splendor, and of sweet union with You. [SD]

Lord, in the beginning You established the heavens and all their power, by Your almighty Logos and the consubstantial Spirit of Your mouth. Together You rule the universe in tri-splendent monarchy of Divinity. [SD]

O divine, almighty Trinity, unconfused Unity, You fashioned me according to Your image and Your likeness. Grant me understanding and enlighten me to do Your holy will, which is gracious in strength and perfect. [SD]

O all-immaculate Virgin, you gave birth to one of the Trinity. He is the Son, wholly divine, incarnate from you for us, and He shines on those born on earth with the never-setting light and splendors of the tri-solar Godhead. [SD]

ᾨδὴ εʹ.

Ode v. N/M (By the brightness of Your coming.)

Trinity that rules as one, You shine with unapproachable beams of Your beauty directly on the first order of Angels. We Orthodox Christians who sing Your praise pray You illumine us with rays of Your light. [SD]

O tri-solar Godhead, in Your goodness You brought human nature into being. Now we extol You, and we pray to be delivered from our offenses and temptations, from peril and affliction. [SD]

Faithfully we glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, one nature and Godhead, separate yet inseparable, the one God of invisible and visible creation. [SD]

Theotokion.

The words of the Prophets all prefigured your ineffable and inexplicable childbirth, O immaculate Virgin. We know your Son to be the one who initiates us into the mystery of the one tri-solar Godhead. [SD]

ᾨδὴ Ϛʹ.

Ode vi. N/M (The lowest depth encircles us.)

(δίς)

Super-essential Trinity, equal in power, You are Unity with identical will, single and undivided. We pray You guard us by Your might. [SD] (2)

O incomprehensible Trinity, in Your goodness, by Your will You brought all the ages into being from nonexistence, and then You fashioned humanity. I pray You now, deliver me from any calamity. [SD]

O immaculate Virgin, Bride of God, you became the house of the never-setting Sun. As almighty, He created and ordered the great luminaries. Now I entreat you to free me from the darkness of the passions. [SD]

Our God is truly one and inseparate nature * in three hypostases indivisibly divided, * remaining inseparate in essence of Divinity. * Let us, born on earth, with fear now worship as Master * the Holy Trinity and glorify our Creator * supremely benevolent. [SD]

Take pity on my soul, which is wretched, and steer it, * O Pure one, for I slipped beneath my many offenses * and into the deep abyss of perdition, O blameless one. * I implore you, save me from divine retribution * in that frightful hour of my death, as the demons * are hotly accusing me. [SD]

ᾨδὴ ζʹ.

Ode vii. N/M (We who believe know you.)

(δίς)

O Logos of God, connatural radiance of almighty God, as You are compassionate, come with Your Father and the Spirit and dwell in me, as You promised; and make me fierce against demons and passions. [SD] (2)

Master, You sent Your Son to our lowliness and restored it to its original splendor; and thus You revealed to us the ocean of Your compassion. I entreat You, grant me wisdom by Your Holy Spirit. [SD]

The King of all, who rides on Cherubim as on a throne, dwelt in your womb, O all-immaculate Virgin. He rescued us from corruption, as our benevolent Lord. I entreat you, protect me by your intercessions. [SD]

ᾨδὴ ηʹ.

Ode viii. N/M (Babylon’s bedewing furnace.)

O almighty Lord of all in three hypostases, with Your divine command You stretched out the heavens like a curtain; then with Your all-powerful hand, You separated the seas from the earth. We pray You, benevolent God, to fortify us Your servants with Your love and with faith, so that we may glorify You with longing unto the ages. [SD] (2)

O divine Light, illumine us who extol the Light, tri-solar in three persons, and also single in essence, so that we may ever gaze at Your light-giving rays. Through them I will be filled with Your glory, sweet, light-giving and all-blessed; and I will faithfully exalt You beyond measure, unto the ages. [SD]

All pure Theotokos, your Son immutably assumed human nature, delivered it from its age-old corruption, and exalted it to heaven, in his surpassing goodness. We sing to Him with gratitude: “Let all creation bless the Lord, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages.” [SD]

The soldiers who were guarding Your tomb became like dead men, * O Savior, when Your Angel appeared there like lightning * and said to the women that You had risen, as You had said. * We now worship You, our only God, and extol You, * for You conquered death and dissolution, O Master, * and rose from the sepulcher. O merciful Lord, nailed to the Cross of Your own will, * O Giver of Life, laid in a tomb as a mortal, * by death You destroyed the power of death, as the Mighty One. * For the doorkeepers of Hades quaked when they saw You. * With yourself You raised those who were long dead, O Savior * supremely benevolent. We know you as the Mother of God and all-blameless, * for you remained a virgin indeed after childbirth. * With longing we flee to you and appeal to your tender love. * We are sinners all, but we have you to defend us. * We rely on you, O Lady.

The women were at the tomb early in the morning. * When they saw a vision of angels, trembling came upon them. * The sepulcher was radiating life, and the dazzling marvel astonished them. * They departed and ran to proclaim the resurrection to the Disciples. * “Christ, the only strong and mighty Lord, * has divested Hades of its spoils. * He has freed the dead from fear of condemnation * by the power of the Cross and raised them all with himself.” [GOASD]

O Life of all, You were nailed to the Cross. * Immortal Lord, You were counted among the dead. * You rose on the third day, O Savior, and resurrected Adam from decay. * Then the powers of the heavens cried out to You, O Giver of Life, and shouted, * “Glory to Your sufferings, O Christ! * Glory to Your resurrection! * Glory to Your condescension, only benevolent God!” [GOASD]

Christ incarnate makes me divine. * Christ humiliated is exalting me. * The Life-giver Christ is making me * dispassionate by suffering Passion in the flesh. * Therefore I am singing Him a song of gratitude. * For He is glorified. [SD]

Christ on the Cross is exalting me. * In dying, Christ is raising me with himself. * To me Christ is freely granting life. * Therefore I clap my hands in gladness of heart * and unto the Savior sing a song of victory. * For He is glorified. [SD]

O Virgin pure, you conceived our God * and gave birth in virginity unto Christ * who took flesh from you the undefiled. * Only-begotten Son is He who is known * in His twofold natures, while in person being one. * For He is glorified. [SD]

Glorified in strength.

Which other anthem worthy of you * in our infirmity shall we present to you, * if not the most joyful song into which Gabriel initiated us: * Virgin Theotokos, unwedded Mother of God, rejoice. [SD]

Spiritually let us cry aloud * with a most purified heart, O believers all, * to the ever-virgin Mother of the King of the angelic hosts on high: * Virgin Theotokos, unwedded Mother of God, rejoice. [SD]

Fathomless indeed is the abyss, * pure Maid, of your inconceivable childbirth. * Therefore with undoubting faith, we offer you this anthem and sincerely say: * Virgin Theotokos, unwedded Mother of God, rejoice. [SD]

Benevolent Lord, You are my God, * who pitied me, the fallen one; and in Your good pleasure You came down to me. * Through crucifixion You have exalted me, * to cry out that Holy are You, O Lord of glory, * and unparalleled in Your benevolence. [SD]

You rose from the tomb in glory as God, and You raised the world along with You. The human race extolled You as God, as death was obliterated, O Master. Now Adam dances, and Eve rejoices, freed from the bonds, and cries out, “O Christ, You have granted resurrection to all!” [GOASD]

Let us extol, as omnipotent God, the One who rose on the third day; for He smashed the gates of Hades, and He raised from their graves the dead from all time. As He wished He was seen by the Myrrh-bearing Women, to whom first He exclaimed, “Rejoice!” thus saying declaring to His Apostles the joy, as the only Giver of Life. Then the women in good faith bring good news of the proof of the victory to the Disciples. But Hades groans, and Death laments. The world exults, and everyone celebrates, O Christ, for You have granted resurrection to all! [GOASD]

We who believe know you.

We extol Your saving Passion, O Christ, and we glorify Your resurrection. [GOASD]

You endured crucifixion, and You abolished death, and You rose from the dead. We pray You grant us a peaceful life, O Lord, as the only Almighty One. [GOASD]

You plundered Hades, and You raised humanity, by Your resurrection, O Christ. We pray You grant us to extol You and glorify You with a pure heart. [GOASD]

We glorify Your divine condescension, and we extol You, O Christ. From the Virgin You were born, and from the Father You remained inseparable. As a man You suffered and voluntarily endured the Cross. As one emerging from a bridal chamber, You rose from the sepulcher, in order to save the world. Glory to You, O Lord! [GOASD]

Additional Stichera by Anatolios.

When You were nailed to the tree of the Cross, then the enemy’s power was destroyed. In fear of You, creation was shaken, and by Your power Hades was sacked. You raised the dead from the tombs, and to the robber You opened Paradise. Christ our God, glory to You! [GOASD]

The loyal women came with haste to Your tomb lamenting, and they found the sepulcher opened. When they learned from the Angel the new and marvelous wonder, they reported to the Apostles, “The Lord has risen, granting to the world the great mercy!” [GOASD]

We honor the sacred stripes that You received at Your Passion, O Christ God, and the divinely revealed imperial sacrifice that took place in Zion at the end of the ages. You, the Sun of Righteousness, enlightened those who were asleep in darkness, and You led them to never-setting illumination. Glory to You, O Lord. [GOASD]

Listen, O brood of Jewish agitators. Where are those who went to Pilate? Let the soldiers who were guarding speak out. Where are the seals of the sepulcher? Where was the buried corpse moved? Where was the unsellable sold? How was the treasure stolen? Why do you discredit the resurrection of Him who was crucified, O lawless Jewish men? He rose, for He was free among the dead, and He grants to the world the great mercy. [GOASD]

You are supremely blessed, O Virgin Theotokos. For through Him who from you became incarnate, Hades has been captured, and Adam has been called back; the curse has been killed, and Eve has been freed; death has been put to death, and we have been brought back to life. Therefore we extol Him and cry out, “O Christ our God, You are blessed, for so was Your good pleasure. Glory to You!” [GOASD]

Then, the Great Doxology; and after that, the following Troparion:

Today has salvation come to pass in the world. Let us sing to Him who resurrected from the tomb and is the Author of our life. For, destroying death by death, He gave us the victory and the great mercy. [SD]
