THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY UNCTION

Τό Εὐχολόγιον ἔχει ὡς ἔναρξιν «Εὐλογητὸς ὁ Θεὸς…» Βλέπε κατωτέρω ὅτι δύναται νά λέγεται «Εὐλογημένη ἡ βασιλεία», πρὸ τῆς Μεγάλης Συναπτῆς.

The Eucholgion indicates that the service should begin with “Blessed is our God.” See below where “Blessed is the Kingdom…” may be inserted before the Great Litany.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. You once used an olive branch to indicate that You were ending the Flood, by Your divine command, O Lord. Mercifully save those who suffer now. [SD]

Brethren, take as an example of suffering and patience the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we call those happy who were steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, that you may not fall into hypocrisy. Is any one among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects. [RSV]

Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed mercy on him.” And Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” [RSV]

Ἄναρχε, ἀδιάδοχε, ἅγιε ἁγίων, ὁ τὸν μονογενῆ σου Υἱὸν ἐξαποστείλας, ἰώμενον πᾶσαν νόσον καὶ πᾶσαν μαλακίαν τῶν ψυχῶν καὶ τῶν σωμάτων ἡμῶν, κατάπεμψον τὸ ἅγιόν σου Πνεῦμα, καὶ ἁγίασον τὸ ἔλαιον τοῦτο· καὶ ποίησον αὐτὸ χριομένοις τοῖς σοῖς δούλοις, εἰς τελείαν ἀπολύτρωσιν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν αὐτῶν, εἰς βασιλείας οὐρανῶν κληρονομίαν. Unoriginate, eternal, most holy God, You sent Your only-begotten Son, who cured every disease and every sickness of our souls and bodies. We pray You send down Your Holy Spirit and sanctify this oil; and when Your servants are anointed with it, make it be for them complete release from their sins and inheritance of the kingdom of heaven. Ἔλαμψε γὰρ ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ἡμῶν τὸ φῶς τῆς ἐπιγνώσεως τοῦ μονογενοῦς σου Υἱοῦ, ἀφʼ οὗ διʼ ἡμᾶς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ὤφθη, καὶ τοῖς ἀνθρώποις συνανεστράφη· καὶ τοῖς δεξαμένοις αὐτὸν ἔδωκεν ἐξουσίαν τέκνα σοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ γενέσθαι, διὰ λουτροῦ παλιγγενεσίας τὴν υἱοθεσίαν ἡμῖν χαρισάμενος, ἀμετόχους ἡμᾶς ἐποίησεν ἐκ τῆς καταδυναστείας τοῦ διαβόλου· ἐπεὶ οὐκ εὐδόκησεν ἐν αἵματι καθαρίζεσθαι, ἀλλʼ ἐν ἐλαίῳ ἁγίῳ ἔδωκε τὸν τύπον τοῦ σταυροῦ αὐτοῦ, εἰς τὸ γενέσθαι ἡμᾶς Χριστοῦ ποίμνιον, βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα, ἔθνος ἅγιον, καθαρίσας ἡμᾶς ἐν ὕδατι, καὶ ἁγιάσας ἐν τῷ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι· αὐτός, Δέσποτα Κύριε, δὸς χάριν εἰς τὴν διακονίαν σου ταύτην, ὡς ἔδωκας Μωσεῖ τῷ θεράποντί σου, καὶ Σαμουὴλ τῷ ἠγαπημένῳ σου, καὶ Ἰωάννῃ τῷ ἐκλεκτῷ σου, καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς καθʼ ἑκάστην γενεὰν εὐαρεστήσασί σοι· οὕτω ποίησον καὶ ἡμᾶς γενέσθαι διακόνους τῆς καινῆς τοῦ Υἱοῦ σου διαθήκης ἐπὶ τὸ ἔλαιον τοῦτο, ἣν περιεποιήσω τῷ τιμίῳ αὐτοῦ αἵματι· ἵνα, ἀποδυσάμενοι τὰς κοσμικὰς ἐπιθυμίας, ἀποθάνωμεν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ καὶ ζήσωμεν τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ, ἐνδυσάμενοι τὸν Κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν, διὰ τῆς χρίσεως τοῦ ἁγιασμοῦ τοῦ μέλλοντος ἐλαίου ἐπάγεσθαι. Γένοιτο, Κύριε, τὸ ἔλαιον τοῦτο, ἔλαιον ἀγαλλιάσεως, ἔλαιον ἁγιασμοῦ, ἔνδυμα βασιλικόν, θώραξ δυνάμεως, πάσης διαβολικῆς ἐνεργείας ἀποτρόπαιον, σφραγὶς ἀνεπιβούλευτος, ἀγαλλίαμα καρδίας, εὐφροσύνη αἰώνιος· ἵνα καὶ ἐν τούτῳ οἱ χριόμενοι, τῷ τῆς ἀναγεννήσεως ἐλαίῳ, φοβεροὶ ὦσι τοῖς ὑπεναντίοις καὶ λάμψωσιν ἐν ταῖς λαμπρότησι τῶν ἁγίων σου, μὴ ἔχοντες σπίλον, ἢ ῥυτίδα, καὶ εἰσδεχθῶσιν εἰς τὰς αἰωνίους σου ἀναπαύσεις, καὶ δέξωνται τὸ βραβεῖον τῆς ἄνω κλήσεως. For You are great and marvelous God, who keep Your covenant and mercy with those who love You. You give release from sins through Your holy servant, Jesus Christ. You regenerated us from sin. You give sight to the blind and restore the broken down. You love the righteous and have mercy on sinners. You brought us out of darkness and the shadow of death, saying to those in bonds, “Come out!” and to those in darkness, “Show yourselves!” For the light of the knowledge of Your only-begotten Son has shined in our hearts; since, for our sake, He appeared on earth and dwelt among men; and to all who received Him, He gave the power to become Your children, O God. He granted us adoption through the bath of regeneration, and freed us from the devil’s oppression. He was not pleased that we be cleansed by blood; but rather He granted us to be anointed with oil in the sign of His Cross, so that when He had purified us with water and sanctified us with the Holy Spirit, we might become the flock of Christ, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. O Lord and Master, bestow grace on this ministry of Yours, as You did with Moses Your servant and Samuel Your beloved, John Your chosen one and all those who in every generation have been pleasing to You. Likewise with this oil, allow us to be ministers of Your Son’s new covenant, which You obtained with His precious blood; so that we may take off worldly passions and die to sin, and put on Christ Jesus, our Lord, and live in righteousness, through the holy Unction we are about to perform. O Lord, let this oil be oil of gladness, oil of sanctification, a royal garment, a strong breastplate averting every diabolical action, an inviolable seal, exceeding joy of heart, everlasting gladness; so that those who are anointed with this regenerative oil may be frightening to their foes, and may shine in the splendor of Your saints, without spot or wrinkle; that they may be admitted to Your eternal Jubilee, and may receive the prize of the heavenly call.
